What is Republic Day & how it is celebrated?

The Constitution of India came into effect on 26th of January 1950 and hence this day is celebrated widely in India. This day was chosen as it was the anniversary of Purna Swaraj Day held in 1930. The first draft of constitution was submitted on 4th of Nov 1947. The first President of India, Dr. Rajendra Prasad took oath on this day. National emblem of India was adopted on this day. President addresses the nation one day before on national television. The day's event starts at 9:00 AM with Prime Minister laying wreath at Amar Jawan Jyoti at India Gate to remember the soldiers who sacrificed their life for the country. A grand military parade & display of military equipment is held at the history Rajpath road in New Delhi. President takes the military salute. Governors take military salute in state capitals. A foreign state head is a chief guest during this day. Apart from Military parade there are various cultural programs held. The event ends at 12 PM.

The general public celebrates this event at their societies, schools with a dignitary hoisting the flag. This is followed by distribution of jalebi fafda & beginning of sporting competition for children like running race, lemon race etc. There are grand discounts at malls and shopping plazas so in the afternoons people head for shopping. In the evenings many societies conduct Anand melas, dj & cultural dance performances. During this day citizens display their love of nation by sporting tricolor clothes or pinning national flag broach / badge on their shirts, t-shirts, coats.
